Alongside their elder siblings, Rosso di Montalcino is extremely impressive. Very much wines in their own right and exceptional value, they acts as a calling card for the vintage and whet the appetite for the wines to come.
Strict volume rules means that only a certain percentage of an estate’s wine can be classified Brunello, however good it is, so many rossos are comprised from declassified fruit, which see a shorter passage in oak and are released earlier. In a great year, you get a taste of the grand vin, in a more challenging vintage the most conscientious growers declassify more or all all their fruit into their rosso so you get and even higher quality product for the same price.
“I treat Rosso di Montalcino like my favourite second wines from Bordeaux – ideal mid-week, kitchen supper bottles, even better with a couple of year’s extra bottle age.”
