The consistency of quality over the past few vintages from Domaine Launay-Horiot has culminated in something truly remarkable in 2020. Likened to Armand Rousseau by Neal Martin and one to watch in this unique vintage, this highly decorated ex-Air Force fighter pilot must be one of the most remarkable stories in the Côte d’Or.
Saving the family domaine, which dates back to the 18th century, Xavier Horiot fought an 11yr court battle with family members to keep the estate and reignite the work left by his beloved grandfather. In only his 6th vintage, this quietly spoken national hero only expresses his gratefulness for being able to farm his grandfather’s land. It was a joy to meet Xavier back in November and his calm, focused nature truly reflects the elegance and precision of the wines he makes.
“There was occasionally a clarity that reminded me of Armand Rousseau”
Neal Martin on Domaine Launay-Horiot
“Just 4 barrels produced in this restricted vintage. Located in the northern part of Pommard, just south of Grands Epenots, the Clos Blanc benefits from lots of limestone offering a more elegance that the Champonnieres. Supple, delicate and really quite pretty. Very ripe mulberry, loganberry and blueberries make up the juicy, rounded palate. This really did benefit from the cool winds down the Combe, giving a real freshness and tension.”
